It Works

Hi! its me, the northern most sister sewing on spruce! I know it has been awhile, but lets not get tied up in the past. I am talking the present! Guess what present I got going? The long arm, referred to as King Tut for now until a better name comes along. I received this machine a year ago as a belated 25th wedding anniversary gift. Some girls want diamonds, I just wanted to sew some of my own quilts. I have two fantastic friends that quilt on professional machines that have done all of my quilts since I started quilting around 2002. They are awesome! But if I am going to keep quilting I need to progress in my learning.

King Tut has been non-cooperative since he came to live in this house last June. I got it a few weeks before my son Nathan and Danielle's wedding June 20, 2009. With company coming from out of state I didn't have the time to get it out of the box till July. It started very easily once Mark got it on my Hinterberg Stretch Frame. I had received the frame a few years before as a Christmas gift from Mark. (can you tell where my heart is?) The long arm is a Voyager 17 from Hinterberg Designs as well located just a few miles away in West Bend. I have putzed with it on and off since then. A few months ago at the encouragement of my Sisters on Spruce I finally took it off the frame and took it back to the factory to have it fixed. I left it overnight and returned to this awesome person who helped get it from the car and then into the shop. She informed me at this point all machines are male that she puts together, mine being one of them.

I got the machine back about two weeks ago hoping to just get it put back on the frame and get it going. Well, I had great intentions. We have a walk out basement were King stays that is unfinished. Our home is pretty new and when it was built someone put in the most terrific wall of windows and a large patio door. I wasn't able to get down in our basement for several years due to health issues. Last year when King came to live with us I spent quite a long time cleaning up after my husband and son. Once King returned from the shop I cleaned the whole basement, (a few spiders here and there had taken up residency) before I wanted to pull out fabric and try King out. My sisters were all here Saturday, July 17, and I wanted to be able to show them how great he was working. I didn't get far enough but on Monday I got down here and finally got part of the fabric loaded on the frame. It isn't easy and takes about two hours to do it all the way. I tried the machine on just a sample fabric and found that the time had come, let's load her up! (the machine may be male but the frame is all female. Long graceful lines, slender legs, and on the belly, a few rolls. Rolls of fabric, not fat...just didn't want anyone jumping to conclusions.) Today I finished loading her up with muslin so I wouldn't waste any fabric or ruin a quilt.

I have made my first web movie of the moment. I wanted to share it with all of you...take a look, I can't believe King is cooperating!

Ahh ... the weekend!!!

Good afternoon! Well we’re back again. I figured if Linda could do a blog post, then so could we. There’s a whole lot that’s happened over the last week or so. Primarily the two things span the weekend last and this weekend. Last weekend was all about getting a podcast or two pulled together over at one of our new groups.

We are now and encouraging anyone here who isn’t so far, but to be looking toward the Big Tent Quilt Cast Super Group. WooHOO!!! I think there are about 20 quilters who are doing podcasts though not all are current. There are about 225 people in the group in general. Well maybe one more. I signed up CS today so that she’s getting all the podcasts too. That was important …

I lined CS up with being able to make a comment on the iTunes podcast and we signed her up for our podcast and signed her up with the SuperCast group. I hope that she has some fun with it, even though it’s not a very active group. I’ve decided to listen to some podcasts this weekend, especially while CS is sleeping.

Right now I’m listening to the Pioneer Quilter, she has her husband and daughter singing on her podcast. It’s cute, but you probably won’t hear it with ours … mostly because we don’t have a daughter or husband. It will be a marker though so I know what kind of podcast it is going to be. She also talks about going to a quilter’s museum in VA when they go on vacation.

Ok, so what is all that about? It seems to be about all we’ve really handled over this last time period. We had found Sandy – Quilting for the Rest of us podcast at iTunes, and then we went into that whole myriad of events. We’ve now got our own podcast called “Unearthing Quiltability” and we’ve got a couple blogs to go with that – one at unearthingquiltability.blogspot.com and the other at unearthingquiltability.podbean.com. Then there is a group online at Bigtent with about 20 quilting podcasters and about 225 people all together who either podcast or just listen.

I didn’t know if it was going to be easy or not to get into the group, because I had really held them in high self-esteem and I didn’t know if I could meet up with their standards. I listened to a few podcasts and it seems they vary with the amount of seriousness they come into their podcast with. We were pretty serious I think. The final product seemed to be picked up with iTunes and we’re very proud of it right now. I think only some of the podcasters start without going straight through. We figured that we’d do our editing work at the start and then as to the podcast … we’d go straight through.

The process seems to have taken us from writing basically a blog entry using Onenote. Then we edited as we do when we are really trying to make sure things seem coherent. There wasn’t anything we took out, but we’d try to smooth it out so others could understand. We read it a few times out loud and then we did the part where we just turned on the recorder to just see what would happen. Wallah!

It was done. We then had to figure out converting, and then getting it recorded to Podbean, and then communicated through Big Tent Super Group (Quilt Cast) and then directing it through iTunes.

The first real recording took about 47 minutes. There were actually two podcasts done … one with video and one with just audio. It seemed that the people that listen like to listen like me right now while we’re working or driving, so even thought I can do the other, I will most likely stick with the auditory one … it’s a lot easier, but in the meantime, I will make sure to post plenty of pictures. I really think that if we can do the technology we should, but we also want to fit in so that others can and will listen to us.

I liked the part of editing ahead so that we could figure out before we started what it was that we wanted to talk about. There were some additional things said – more off the cuff, but in general there was some order to it.

It seems a natural part that people talk in the podcasts about people who said something to them during the week or month or two months whatever the time period before airing. We’ll probably do something like that, but I’m not sure with how much detail. It seems it’s a big part of podcasting to be listening to others and deciding the things you want to do or not to do in your own. I had written in one of our accounts about Leo Laporte and his sense of aggregating information. It’s the process of collecting information, sifting through it through the interests of others, and then that being picked up in form by the next guy and the next and that the really good stuff gets put really forward. He brought to the level of things that had gone viral with You Tube.

I’ve been doing a lot of listening to Leo because I think he’s just so gosh darn intelligent and knowledgeable with what’s going on in the electronic world. I talked a bit about it with Dr. Marvin and we went into some very far-fetched idealizing. We were really happy with the whole idea of podcasting and that it would include something so important to me like with the blogging and the quilting. It was something that combined ALL of my interests including communicating together and with that it was something that could be saved. It was a really big deal to me that we’d end up on iTunes. It was like publically publishing and finding our platform. I can be happy here for most likely the rest of my life, or until the next medium is born.

I just can’t believe that we’re doing something like this.

This weekend up at CS we started to do top-quilting, but that didn’t turn out so good, in that we made a mistake in not starting out in the middle and stitching outward and it was a terrible blow to our enthusiasm. We ended up falling asleep at 7 pm and we stayed mostly asleep until 13 ½ hours later at 8:30 am. CS had us practicing on some samples where things were printed out and just needed to be traced, and she had some papers that would be taped to cloth and then practiced stitching, and then she showed us quilt pouncing.

I think most of that was going into my minds, but it was a lot of information. When we finally got to the green and yellow quilt we were going to try on – we took a thread that would not stand out too much and we progressed. But, our machine is very old and doesn’t have the function of just pulling the material in any direction. For ours, you have to twist and turn the blanket according to the direction of the stitch. It took a big toll on my elbow and shoulders. CS said that we were doing the classic mistake of new quilter’s in that we were too uptight so we were putting a strain on our mind and muscles.

We made it through the end of the line, but then we pretty much had had it.

I don’t remember if I mentioned it, but we’re now finished with the putting together of the fishes. I’m so happy with that part, but the next part is going to take some time. We’re going to need sizing the fish so they are all basically 6 1/2” I miss our sewing sister Linda and wish we’d have her to talk through things this weekend. I think she has other things she has to get done.

I’m now listening to someone named Amy who has a podcast “The Quilter’s Notebook.” She seems to be more direct on talking about quilting than had been the last person. She introduced her family news, and then went into her projects. Her podcast is about 45 minutes. I’ll let it play out and then give her a review. She seems very knowledgeable as to quilting and what she’s to do with it. She also has some ideas for her listeners. She asks about her favorite quilting atmosphere. I might respond back to that. It seems we’ve all got problems getting enough information from others. But, that’s something that will come in time.

I’m wondering how that’s going to happen and that I can build up my podcasts.

I’ll get ideas listening to others. Amy’s first part seems to be talking mainly about a Quilting notebook that can be done on paper or with computer. She starts with writing journal entries. Oh man … she loves OneNote … gotta like this lady! Her first recording seems to be done from onenote too – or at least the putting together of her podcast.

Ok, this is probably something good to get started with again … so next … lets trim those blocks!

Hi it's Linda,
Just a long over due update of how long I've been quilting and how it all started. The above photo is my grandmother's crazy quilt. Back in January 2002 when we were able to go through my grandmother's things I was asked if there was anything of grandma's I wanted. I said "yes, grandma had a crazy quilt top started and I would like that." I took some vintage fabrics and enlarged it to fit a king size bed.
I had to go to the local quilt shop to find out how to even sew a block. They told me and I was off. I put it together much as you would a pillow top and then turned it right side out and sewed up the 10" hole. Then I tied it because that is the way grandma finished them. Someone at work explained how her grandmother did it (the quilt sandwich.) Old sewing machine decided to not work and bought new one to finish the quilt. Wanted a machine with an automatic button hole feature (like I'm ever going to sew clothes again.)
From there I bought quilt magazines, what a wealth of information. Also needed to justify the new sewing machine purchase so made a nine patch quilt using some of the vintage fabric and bought some new fabric (the beginning of a stash.)
February 2002, daughter buys me a rotary cutter and memory mat. What a marvelous gizmo. I'm on my way. Now we need another project to try out this new gadget. Make a quilt of appliqued frogs love those critters.
March 2002 , in yet another magazine I learn about E-bay buying, oh boy how great is that? I purchase some block kits. The start of my theme quilts. Son gets Basset hound quilt. Can't leave out his girlfriend she gets pink log cabin quilt. Daughter likes Snow White she gets that. Son-in-law gets Labrador Retriever(they had just had their dog put to sleep.) They all received these for
Christmas2002.
February 2003, I take a long arm quilting class (birthday gift from hubby), and can rent time on a long arm machine. A whole new kettle of fish. Need to make another quilt to use this new found information. Niece is getting married she get blue log cabin quilt.
April 2003, By this time I have picked up fabric here and there, there and here. I need to start another quilt to start using up this acquired fabric. Now have storage problem.
May 2003, I remember girlfriend has favorite season autumn - want to try that maple leaf pattern I saw in one of those many quilt magazines subscriptions I now receive. Have another girlfriend who can't be slighted who likes polar bears. Another theme quilt. Up to this point I have finished each quilt no Un Finished Objects. Read in yet another magazine that the average quilter has 6 UFO's. Gee, I have always strived to at least be average - start purple tessellating stars quilt - sister-in-laws favorite color, mother-in-law has green living room, someone is always having a baby........and the saga continues.
I enjoy this (obsession) hobby very much. I have made many quilts and smaller quilted projects. The best are the people that share my passion. Happy Quilting.

AHA! Linda's been sleeping at the blogging wheel!

I swiped this from Linda's Facebook note this morning. We need to teach the sisters about posting all the good sewing stuff over on this blog! Hmm? And, CS ... all that work you are doing on the sewing studio? That is supposed to be posted here too so we can keep up with your progress. We're ready for some pictures on that walk-in closet :)

I had told you about the project over on Sandy's (the podcast lady) blog.  This morning I found the picture of her latest challenge.  She's asking anyone who's out here to make a quilt using the following picture as the inspiration.  The finished quilt (picture) is due by Labor Day ... Pretty cool!  Anyone have any ideas?

I know it gets you right in the heart ... this critter is no Daisy Dog, but what do you think? Have any quilting ideas?

Oh man ... I'm at work this morning ... I know how I'm going to do this ... Just need the fabric and actual placement of things.  But, what do you think of this - I think I'm going to go for it!

It should be interesting.  I don't know if I'd use just black, gray and white ... or shades of another color thinking lights, mediums and darks.  There's a lot to think through.  I'm most likely going to save the major colors for Mary and Jesus, but it still be done in cubism ... maybe 1 1/2" squares.

PS - Did you all stop over at the blog to see the new Title Picture??!

We're as busy as Moose Sisters Get!

Afternoon. This is me being smiley :) I’m doing real good considering I was almost done with this post and then accidently erased it. *sigh* all those things happen though for a purpose. Someone was probably trying to say … Ann you can be a little more succinct! Pretty much what we’re going to do here with the help of pictures is to spread out what’s been happening over the last couple weeks of not writing. It’s been pretty busy. Some parts up and some parts down … which includes activities and our internal personalities. Go figure. We’re still riding out a schedule at work where I’m there as little as possible.

To be fair I had problems adjusting to a lot of things going on and then some regular aches and mystery pains. We’ve become drowsy behind the wheel and we have what I think amounts to golfer’s elbow. We’ll find out tomorrow because we’re scheduled for a regular doctor visit. That was some part of this time frame too, because we hadn’t had a Dr. Marvin appointment for three weeks. Wow. Way too long!

Before we get into things proper … I too wanted to say something positive in that we’ve heard from two of the three boys yesterday. Maury stopped over for a few moments to give Rich a picture he’d found of an old map. He knows Rich collects them so it was a nice thing. He’s talking about getting together with us, but still hasn’t picked a way to do it … so we’re going to try and hang loose with that. Joe also called and it was a pretty cool conversation. He has picked a day – he asked us what we were doing on July 3rd. He said he’d like us to come see his new apartment – Maury’s asked the same, and then we’ll probably go out to dinner with Joe and Cari so we can talk about the wedding that follows 3 weeks from that time. Joe gave me a lot of time to talk about things going on here so that was an additional bonus. I do love the kids. Just they are so gosh darn busy. That’s what all Mom’s our age say though, right?

Ok, back to our story more in time with the pictures. Last we left off we were working on fishes. This was before the CS trip first weekend of June. This is the last fish we were working on. I believe there is only 3 left including this one. They are going to be soooo beautiful if we could ever just get a handle on it, but in the meantime so much comes up … just don’t know which way to turn.

As to CS’s that seems to be still fairly fresh in our mind. One of the first things that we remembered was meeting this moose. It was like CS? Where did THAT come from? Hehehe Turns out it was a gift of Emily who was clearing away things in a garage sale. Word is she’d carried this by plane all the way from MN to WI. We found that up on the fridge would be a good place for him … he’s big enough to still garner attention. We told CS she should remove the oatmeal, but she was pretty convinced Noey was going to get up there and break something. Besides Macy eating more petals … things went ok with the animals. Emily tries her best to block them off and CS has Kleenexes waiting for her.

We made sure to get a jump on things right away Friday night. We staked our corner on the end of the table as the best position to not over-do our space availability … I went short, but wide, Emily and Linda went wide, but not deep. CS got as normal her table end. Before the girls got there on Saturday, we did a lot of trimming of CS petals. She’d done another 25% so was up to 50%. She also took on our part of the block project. Hopefully she’ll see the sense in sharing that back with Linda and Emily. It’s too much on the difficult side for us yet.

I felt I was taking too much space and dropping fabric down on poor Linda, but she was nice about it. The nice thing about the table is because of the clear top you can put things underneath it which normally take up more space. It was a luxury voyage in that things were on the same flat level as the needle with lots of room to the back and side, but most importantly 7” of real estate toward the front. It gives you a good opportunity to smooth things out.

After the petals, we worked on the table skirts. CS showed us how to ruffle and it turned out to be real quick and fun. There were quite a few to go through, but it wasn’t bad - Soon after though we went to bed. We didn’t get our evening project as scheduled done so that interrupted the morning, but even that worked out.

This picture of course is of the quilted moose! I don’t know what to say of the moose sleeping, but it was after hours, I assure you! There was really good conversation as always and a lot of catching up to do. Linda brought treats again, Emily brought a pudding/jello and Mark bbq’d for the group. I know, I know Ann’s a slouch. Some time getting there is all we manage. CS, Linda and Emily worked on the small and large squares. Linda’s posted some pictures of them – so please take a look … they are so cool. This quilt(s) are going to be wonderful! We also might get a couple of newbies. Janet and Jean friends from the quilting retreat might join us the next time on July 17th. We’ll all have to make room, but we are all looking forward!

And another ta-da moment ...

This is the project that I ended up working on. It matched the colors Emily and CS were doing in class. CS taught me how to do the appliqué binding which turned out pretty cool. We were just real appreciative of it being simple and ready to jump together within one day. We needed a project like that to help calm us down.

Sunday we had our problems leaving and didn’t want to go back to the real life. We hadn’t finished nearly enough and we had so much to do AND the company was good. Unfortunately CS ran into some rough water with a few younger parts not wanting to go down in the basement or work together with anyone. I think we were overtired, over-stimulated, and over-sugared! Pretty sure we had some coffee too. What finally helped us get through it was to not worry about the basement and to work steadily for a bit on the fabric bricks at CS. The above picture shows some of the fabric and it’s going to be really nice one day when we can work on these too. There’s absolutely soooo much to do and so little time. The colors and patterns though are great!

Back at home we didn’t want to give up the striping. The sewing was very relaxing and we were pretty keyed up. CS sent us home with a couple extra jelly rolls (2 ½” x 40” strips). We worked on the stars and stripes one, and then added our extra with Thom’s Marine emblems and colors. It felt like it went together as smooth as butter. And, when we were done we were so happy to announce it was going to go to Vickie. Vickie has a son in Afghanistan, and he drives a tank. Pretty sure he’s going to be involved with stuff. She worries a lot, but does a lot of constructive things in keeping a big group of mothers together. She’s my best on-line Marine Mom friend and we love her dearly.

We messed around somewhat in thinking of doing another Marine-type quilt, but we lost heart in doing it with trying to work with Moda. They had a lot of fabric swatches to look at at their site, but they weren’t available except through dealers and no dealer had my stuff or at least a way of cataloging what we wanted. It was very frustrating. Most of these colors worked off the three stars and wreaths, but I guess it was another learning experience without actual money of having fun and figurin. Butterflies! What were we thinking?

A couple of small projects got done in that we figured out how to re-do the hem and we got CS house to sit up on the right side. WooHOO! AND, we did it all ourselves! Part of what slowed us down was the amount of ordering that went into the end of last week. I believe we went to work on Tuesday, but then stayed home Wed, Thur, and Fri being mentally sick and much too obsessively busy. We found ourselves very involved in the writing back and forth with the Sister Moose and we found that was more enjoyable than anything else - when Linda started talking about getting some organization in her house cleaning.

We went to town and ended up in the next state. We found several programs we were being influenced by. But, first just wanted to jump some pictures here – part of that ordering work we did played out in washing, sweeping, mopping, wiping, and straightening the Kitchen. FlyLady said it was zone 2 in the kitchen and dining room. In the process of having everything so neat and ordered, Rich decided that I should permanently take on the household tasks in total. He’s still doing the shopping, the up and down with laundry and the cooking. There’s no doubt there could be more balance so we said yes. One day we got to the front design board, and the following is a result of that. It was very satisfying!

We didn’t get back to the fish after that … our thoughts were that we’d finish this simple striped quilt – yes CS snuck in three more projects without completing any we’d taken up including Joe and Cari’s quilt and we are like a kid in a candy store. We thought hmm, how long could that take. I think the problem with this project other than taking 3-4 days, was that in the end we miss cut the end and we’ll have to lop about 10” of the 90” off … CS seems pretty forgiving, but it was definitely a blunder in folding and evening out. It’s pretty though and soooo nice and welcoming warm.

And this ...

This is the FlyLady if you haven’t seen her already. CS and Linda were probably frightened by all we were pushing out, but they remained steady and worked through their own projects. CS is doing her closet and bought another shelf to replace the space where there used to be bricks or will be used to when I’m finished, she bought some sweater things for more cloth, and a stepping stool to get to the top of her closet. She’s really going to town. She even took down the empty shoe boxes she’d been holding on to and she got more ink to print out the fabric catalog. I think we have 80 pages, and I haven’t finished what I got and there’s a lot more to go. I would like to see the collage pages back to back with plastic sleeves, but we have to worry about the expense, because we are going to need two copies one for both of us north and south Spruce Hehehe.

Linda is doing Linda stuff that includes in no small part quilting, family and CLEANING! Yeek! We talked to Linda and CS a bit of a challenge in the obtaining of some kind of ordering devise as per Flylady, we could give some of our stuff away, put it away somewhere different or throw it away. We picked up a real nice set of bags from her store for only $14.99 and shipping, but Rich was pretty frustrated. He didn’t want us spending anything until the mid-month check comes in. He likes to carry a balance, and our thought is … well there’s still money in the account!

The next item we looked at, but didn’t buy was this ironing table. It’s really a nice one made by reliable. It’s double gusseted for strength, but primarily it has an expandable table which is really, really nice for the kind of ironing I’m doing. We looked high and low for the best deal. There’s one selling on eBay now for $160 where they usually go for $250, but I have to wait until the money comes in and after CS can help us order from eBay. We never did it and don’t know how that sort of thing works. It’s about all I wanted to spend on a table. It was really sad when ours died, because it was old when we got it 30 years ago. We’ve had it longer than we had Maury Pat. It’s a bit of history, but it disintegrated. Very sad. We’re also going to need one of those gismos to hang it up on the back of the door.

As to the craziness … most of it revolved between FlyLady, which is an iPod app, and then the two apps ALSO backed up on-line as the “Outliner” and the “CalorieCount.” You can get a pretty good idea what’s been happening with all that. We seem to have gone off a deep end. I think that they are both useable, but at first they need quite a bit of studying to figure out. I seems we didn’t get so far from that … and then we were trying to figure out the next part.

In our setting up things to be listening to that was constructive, we came across an podcast of a Lady named Sandy who was very compelling and down to Earth. It didn’t take too long to find that Sandy and the FlyLady were both at a site called BigTent.com Well, you know us and how this kind of thing happens, but now we’re not only a member of FlyLady, we took on 12 more quilting groups. One is here in Chicago, but the others are to some level of professionalism or another just quilters talking and broadcasting. That’s tilted us again … first in wanting to listen to it all and then in trying to add to it all. It’s all very exciting. I think it’s like the old fashioned message boards where people write or talk in their points of view so we’ll have to be discerning in turning some of it off. It does seem to be something nice to listen to, although even that interferes with CNN, Rhapsody and Leo LaPorte the Tech guy.

I think this has been part of our problem. Everyone inside seems to be blossoming or fainting not too much in-between. We’re going through this entire stimulus and have to slow down to put it maybe not in order as much as perspective and priority. I don’t think anyone with 20 minds can slow things down enough to take on all of that which is out there. There’s been some good though. It’s good to have a nicer and more full sense of home, we got out walking with Rich and he seems to be quite happy with most of the turns of events, with the exception he’s pretty much serious about me going back to work. Sister has understood, but I know that the center’s annual report is waiting my return along with more staffings and other - too much, too much.

But you wanna know what else? Rich had asked me to hand sew a label onto his umpire uniform. I did it, and it probably now has to be done by a professional, but in the process I had found the space our old sewing and cross-stitch stuff was in. We found the most amazing thing. It is the quilt that we made so long ago in our early teens. It wasn’t particularly pretty – all old material from my great grandmother, but, it has soooo much meaning. My Grandmother had given me a red box of sewing squares and the treadle sewing machine. I hadn’t remembered. It’s my history, its CS history and Linda and Emily … and it’s for real! Everything in time.

Oh my gosh ... look what just happened ... I went to my email and found this! This is from the lady on the podcast mentioned above. Isn't the world just so small and wonderful!

Saturday Sewing on Spruce Street

Hi it's Linda,
Had a very productive weekend. Saturday was sewing on Spruce, had a great day, good company and good food. I continued the momentum into Sunday and finished all of my group blocks. Great way to spend a weekend. Keeps the mind active and focused on the task at hand.

I look so forward to the first Saturday of the month. Mainly to be with my quitled moose sisters who share my passion for quilting. What a great way to spend the day. Can't wait for July.

Tuesday, June 1, 2010

It’s been a busy week! I need days of to rest from my days off :)

Good morning. We're waiting for Rich to get home and it is about 4 am in the morning. I think you all know that he is driving back from New Mexico with his daughter WOOHOO!! She'll be in town for about a month. Sweet!

In the meantime I figured I better check out where we left out on here. I've been keeping FB updated of course and somewhere during the weekend we updated our normal blog, but now this one needs some attention. I'm pretty happy that the two of you have both posted since I've been here. It's really pretty cool. Linda has finished two pillow cases AND started on the squares for the group quilt. Last I heard from CS is that the petal project for the group quilt is going really well in that they look very nice - WHEN not being eaten by animals or Mark. CS hasn't talked about her percent complete so we don't know where she is with that. I'm afraid of the whole square project, because I couldn't figure out how to do it. *sigh*

BUT, there is other things that have gotten done!

First was that I had finished the top part of the wedding quilt to Joe and Cari.

I still have some inner corners to finish up at CS on the borders. I couldn't figure how to get them to lay down flat. I trust that CS will have the answer.

After this project I went over to the curtain project. I had four panels to make. I really LOVE them. I think both the colors and pattern is PERFECT and I can't believe that my studio and bar is coming along so well.

Bar … bar? Did we say that? Basically it's down the line, but this addition was made to the sewing studio.

Nice, hmm? I was really proud when this got finished on Saturday before the big date night. I hadn't thought of it in the plans when we were planning the room, but it seemed to come along as a natural progression of the space.

After the curtains we got back into the table skirts … that was a good project too. We made 10 panels. They are 44" wide, but should come down by about 1/3 to 29-30" with the ruffles.

The fishing project is always a tough one, but that's been progressed too. We finished one whole set of fishes, and have started on the third to the last. We're moving here. Just it's slow. It's such a big project that sometimes little projects get put in-between things.

We also got around to redesigning one of the design boards - the one in the studio. It looks like this.

Somewhere in here too … we finished the project where there is a edge glued to the shelves. It looks a little like pink marble. It matchens the light pink of the curtains and skirts.

We went through quite a bit with Rich to do some handiperson stuff like getting up the design wall, boards cut and the quilt up. There was a little anger involved on both parts, but we ended up on a date night regardless. I'd like to think that Shrek - Forever After in 3-D put us in good spirits, but the Margaritas might have helped.

We aren't really complaining that the quilt got put up upside down. Two steps forward, one step back.

You can tell there's a problem because the house in the middle is resting on it's roof. We have to take in the quilt a few more inches, and then we're going to leave that project go. I love that it's up AND it didn't fall down!

In general, we've gotten a lot done over this last week since posting. It really helps having a light week. We'd had a 3 day weekend last weekend, and then we went to work a day, and then we had the next two days off at business meetings, and then we've had a four day weekend. Pshoo … no idle hands in this woman's workshop!

The next thing accomplished is that we went back to wrapping kits. Before Rich left Sunday night he brought up the four bags from CS that I'd left in the car. He said there was more than 100 pounds of fabric, but he got it up in one load. So now the north wall is looking more filled in.

It's the bricks on the top shelve that got finished yesterday. We thought then we MIGHT go back to the fishing, but we kept thinking we're going to be back at CS by this next weekend and we needed to figure out what SHOULD be done before we get there. I thought we'd been gathering up enough kits … we're up to 44 and there's a lot more in-between because of the kits that are 10-12 deep.

In total we had 80 pages to our Quilt Catalog project. That was the last one finished over the long weekend. I was really happy with the process of all in general.

There are so many gorgous projects … I'll just put a few out though … You'll get the idea.

I feel tired thinking about all the work! It was a pretty amazing process though in general. I think it really helps having the blogs, FB AND my quilting sisters to keep the work going forward. CS and us had talked quite a bit ago about Quilted Moose - Sisters Sewing on Spruce. Our place got initiated now as Spruce South - Ann Marie's Studio and Bar. I don't know if this is going to upset my non-drinking sisters, but if they'd like I can put in some orange juice making it officially a juice bar! That work, right? Besides a few blurry pictures it barely shows at all :)

Ok, better get in the shower.  We're thinking Rich is going to walk through that door any moment unless he and Jillian decided to stop overnight at a motel.  I'm really hoping by now they did it ... because it would have been like 24 hours driving.  I know they will share the job, but I know Rich tends to take in way more than his share.  He wants to get back for business, but you just can't process with that kind of tired on ya.  Well, I know my part ... time to take a shower.  Should be an easy day hehehe ... just doing work work!

AHA! Rich is home now. He got in just before 6 am. I had gotten through my shower and was filling my water glass for medicine and I heard that wondrous sound of his voice … all SAFE AND SOUND!! We talked to him for just a few moments as he was changing into his jammas and then we turned back the bed when he stopped in the washroom. Now he's all smooched and tucked in … GOOD DAD!

We've read over our work and looked at pictures for a bit, but with only a half hour before work, we're not really feeling like doing so much sewing before leaving. Sooo you get me for another 1/2 hour. Sorry too late, too bad!

Hmm, am I talked out? Noooo, I can't believe that! I did want to say something about the feelings of having had such a productive long weekend. I figure 9 projects in total - Joe's wedding quilt, curtains, bar, table skirts, fish, design board, shelve edges, kit bricks, and then last the Quilting catalog. The feeling is like WOW! Did I do all that?

I think the way that it seemed most productive was to think only for a short time … "What's next." It was more like ok, what do I have to do next. The operative word being "do" or "doing." There's something to be said for seeing so many projects waiting to be completed. I didn't want to get overwhelmed, but instead arrange some process so we could go from one thing to another. I'm thinking that if there is extra time at CS's that even for the stuff she wants to keep there - like the stuff in her bed drawers that we have to get them photographed so that we can have a complete inventory of all the projects.

We talked briefly with CS on-line this weekend when commenting on pictures about getting a couple of printed catalogs together. That made me feel good as if there was progress. We also talked briefly about the donating of quilts to non-profits. I'm not sure if we said it quite like that, but it’s the jist. We want to cover as much of a spectrum as we can. The idea is that we cover a lot of agencies, though maybe not so much a lot to anyone agency. That way they could choose to give to someone in particular, use it for a fundraiser, display, whatever. Sister sometimes has people coming in that donate and there's usually a picture taken in the handing over of the quilt. I'm not sure if we can get that far, but I'd like to think it's possible. There should be a page or a portion of the pictures - of the finished quilts and who they have gone too. It's the idea of touching as many lives as we can. I really like the idea of letting the agencies decide the best use of the quilt.

I'm thinking there should be a little more put into it … like coming up with a mission statement. Basically there should be a common theme like "Wrap-Around-the-Warmth." It would be something where we'd be passing good deeds forward. I know CS has talked about selling the quilts and it's going to be inviting with the pictures in sellable format, but maybe we can use Don's format for selling to list the projects, but not really sell them - just have them on order to be making them. It's just that it seems there is some purpose to CS having bought all these quilt kits. They certainly can't be as profitable in resale, because it's doubtful she could get more than she had put into them.

It might be a good time to note that today is our Grandma's birthday. Grandma spent most of her life donating to good causes - primarily cancer care. She did a lot of quilts for good causes and made sure that all her immediate family had quilts. It was a tradition that would be good for us. I'm pretty sure in this regard CS is on the same track. Paying it forward?

Keep writing sisters that sew!

Accomplishment after all

Hi it's Linda I did get some sewing done after all. This is our group project, or the start of mine. I had no problem figuring out the bundles. Made perfect sense to me.

Not much to write about, just wanted to post my progress. Maybe more tomorrow night. It's great having it all cut out for you. You can just sit down and sew. Thanks, Ann Marie.

Off to bed.

Quilt blocks from sisters

Hi,

It's Linda, didn't get any sewing done but I did get a chance to look at my blocks from our community quilt. Thanks, Ann Marie for cutting , thanks Connie Sue for donation of fabric, and thanks to Emily and Tony for messinger service. I set the pieces out hoping it all made sense. I will actually try and sew this evening. Not real sure I understand but will ask for help if I need it.
When I got up this morning, I discovered I had left the iron on all night. Good thing mine shuts off, but the lights were blinking all night. It's amazing I haven't burned down the house. I guess I have been preoccupied with other things on my mind.
Since I will be off of work again, the plus to that is I should get more sewing done. Maybe a side trip to a quilt shop or two. Not sure just when I will be off and for how long, seems to be a day by day thing. So far I'm employed until they tell me differently. I might just be there to help tie up the loose ends, maybe a few days of packing files and that type of work.
I have been doing my hand sewing during lunch hours and getting some done on my Grandmother's Flower Garden quilt. That will be years in the making, but that's okay that's my to go project. It's so portable.
That's about it for the time being. Will blog at a later day.

Forgot my name

Ohhp, on my last post I forgot to sign it. It was me, Connie Sue, who wrote the Tahhhdaa blog!

Tahhdaa, I remembered how to get here!

OK, I know I am not the best at blogging but I am working on it. It is a true sign that if you have to look up as to how to sign on, you haven't been here for awhile. I am not very good at carrying the laptop around as my sister has mentioned but I am trying. I really don't have much to say so far today. I am very tired. Mark's hours are conflicting so I have been trying to help as much as I can. Between helping him keep on schedule, dressed in clean clothing, fed, and helping at church, I am totally off my old schedule. When he accepted the newer job I knew it was going to be a family effort. Somehow when he told the one job is Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday evenings that is when the other job schedules him the heaviest. The Monday and Wednesdays are the hardest. The daycare that is attached to our church cannot be missed for any reason. Soooo, when there is no way for Mark to fit it in realistically and physically, then Nathan has been helping as well as Danielle and myself. There is nothing like bags of diapers and food garbage to make you wrap that bag up fast and get it out.

Last night I was helping with the cute newborn section while Nathan started downstairs in the toddler section, I had put my tote bag in my big mover arounder bin. Not sure about the technical term but it is a real large round Rubbermaid garbage can shaped thing on wheels and has a holder for all the sprays like window cleaner, furniture polish, garbage bags x 2 sizes, paper towels etc. I couldn't leave my tote bag, (it is bright yellow with pink and white polka dot trim, one of those that say, tahhhdaa, I am here) in the storage closest because it had my wallet, water, salad from McDonalds, and umm, a chocolate brand candy bar-for emergencies. I placed it on the one side of the mover arounder so I had it wherever I went. I love the moverarounder because it makes me feel organized for anything that I may have to clean or throw out. Having my tote and the moverarounder together really makes me feel empowered.

The problem came when Mark, Nathan and I were all upstairs getting ready to finish the daycare and move onto the church part of the building. I went to pull my tote bag out when I got distracted and Nathan grabbed the whole garbage bag out of my moverarounder. He had no idea I had my tote bag in there. Nathan was about to leave and was taking all of the stinky garbage bags to the dumpster. It is a yucky part of the job but he has a system involving using his truck so I surly don't fight for the position of garbage dumper. After I said goodbye to Nate and Mark went to work downstairs I thought about my McD's salad. Well, you could probably guess what happened. Nathan threw my tote bag out. I called Mark downstairs and gave him the news that I had to go get my bag out of the dumpster. He has been married to me long enough to know that yes, I have done some remarkably stupid things. I went out to the dumpster and started to reach the closest bags, (yuuchhhh, diapers and food, I didn't want the salad anymore) when Mark came out with a ladder to help. He did not have to say much but just gave me the "look". It isn't the same "look" I get from Ann Marie but just as chilling nonetheless. I wish I would have had my camera because Mark inside the huge dumpster would have made a memorable picture...he is the one that mentioned the historical shot, not hysterical. Anyway, after a few minutes of throwing bags out at me to look through and being asked multiple times what the tote bag looked like, Mark found the garbage bag with my bright yellow bag. The bag was in the liner, smaller bags were thrown into the liner, just to clear up the fact that the tote and the garbage were separated by plastic yet all in one bag. Confusing but important so you don't get the idea that my tote bag was full of the aforementioned yuckkk. Oh, man, I was lucky that I was in the position of just going home if Mark got too mad at me. I was there voluntarily x2. I didn't have to be there to begin with and I could have gone home when Nathan did. A double whammy. Mark was easy on me in fear of me leaving him behind to finish on his own.

You may wonder how much sewing I got done? Well, I did get two of the petal blocks completed on Sunday and yesterday before leaving for church. Yesterday was very hot and muggy here. I tried to be tough and just open windows and wait for the Lake Michigan breeze to cool our home. I have been told about the lake breeze reducing the need for air conditioning but haven't felt it yet. We are only about 15 miles from Lake Michigan as the crow flies. It must run out of the nice breeze by the time it gets here because all we get is wind in the spring and fall that blows all the garbage and leaves from our yard into someone elses's. (We live on top of a hill with a view of all West Bend. Almost like being in a castle but with no real mote. Great for fireworks and airshows from the airport just down the hill). OK, back to sewing. Sunday night I was to help Mark at church after he got done with his other job at 10:30. The only problem was by the time he had gotten home the smuggly weather had already started to settle in. Ludford's don't handle heat well. I was not feeling so hot (not going into specifics here) so Mark went to church without me. I didn't get to bed till 2am after being woken up out of the chair from waiting for Mark to come back for me. He didn't come back for me, but because he was done. I got up and had to take a shower since the whole house was like a oven. I did get up with Mark Monday morning to make sure he got out to work. OK, the sewing part. I had to get a little more sleep since I only had a few hours. I decided to make the official "I can't take the heat, it's time to turn the air on" decision. I made two blocks and decided I needed a nap. Well, the air works wonderfully and I snuggled under my blanket not waking up till Nate stopped by to take me to church. If you go back and try to count it out...I think I got four blocks appliqued in the last two days.

Mark will be leaving soon to go work with a unscheduled client for two hours. He has been sleeping the whole time I have been up blogging. When he leaves...my pillow is calling me back to get a few minutes of nap in. I took a shower last night after getting home at midnight. I was hot and well, rather stinky so a quick shower was needed. It really helped cool me off so I could sleep. The dogs reminded me at 5am that they were supposed to be taken out. Once they woke me up I couldn't fall back asleep. Since the shower was taken last night, all I need to do is finished getting dressed and brush my teeth. Oh my gosh, it is after 1! For not having anything to write, I sure have lost track of time writing. This afternoon I will be taking a short nap, sewing a little and then grocery shopping once Mark gets home from work. I am not cleaning at church but sewing tonight. The biggest looser is on and I will be watching it. Hopefully Mark will be not in the kitchen so I can claim the TV while I sew.

Linda, I am so sorry to hear about your job. I wrote you a FB message last night. That really sucks. You are invited any day at anytime here to sew. The last few days my schedule has been totally upside down. Today things should calm down with grocery shopping and hopefully Nathan will be here to put my truck, Big Blue, back together. I went with him last night to buy a big heavy part and to have the battery tested. I guess they are both needed to get it started but both failed the test on the stores computer. Once it starts I will be able to take it for a muffler. I will drive it a little while noisy but Mark can't drive it to see clients this way. OK, so much for blogging! Off to get something else accomplished! Oh yeah, one more thing...the neighbor is back to sanding his deck and the neighbor on the other side put up a trampoline and a big camper. It is very noisy so I will be keeping the air on to keep things quieter and cooler. Taahhdaaaa! I remembered how to blog!

Not jumpin into the day, but moving through it steadily

Good morning … this is me. I wanted to say thanks for the conversation on the Swiffer products. I’m a little lost this morning as to being specific, but in general … We have a Swiffer floor mop … and we like it for spot cleaning, because it is quick and easy to use. The supplies take quite a while to use … so we’re not so worried about replacement of supplies – most things cleaning need replacing. I like it because I can do some quick pick-ups between the times that Rich does the deeper cleaning. I like the idea of a steamer for the floors a lot, just don’t know enough about them yet. I don’t think we have that much space to justify too much cost. It would take some investigation. If you have a brand favorite send it to me and I’ll do some looking up :) I’d be interested in knowing if there’s something that does vinyl floor AND doing carpet.

I do have to say that even though the clothes steam cleaner has been in the house less than a week, I’m already very happy with it. There is going to be some learning as to how to use it, but the primary things are that you go from top to bottom and for things like shirts it works better to steam from the inside out. I think its because the weight of the cloth presses up against the nozzle just right. I was really proud of Rich for his enthusiasm toward it especially this morning. He asked for the lesson and then followed through.

It’s pretty cool in that you can just press it up against the cloth and the wrinkles just seem to fall off the fabric. Very cool! I think the time and effort is pretty cool too. It is about 5 times faster because you are not constantly jockeying the fabric to fit the ironing board. The hardest part is just turning the hanger one full degree to go from the front to the back. It’s pretty cool. I like too that it takes just 2-3 minutes to warm-up … Rich was like well we’ll turn it on and then I’ll take my shower … and it’s like while we were talking the steam started coming out of the nozzle and we were like … um, but it’s already ready.

See steam comes out nozzle and wallah … you are in the business! Besides it’s a gizmo … that goes over generally well with the guys! Hehehe.

As to the washer and dryer … we’re just talking about a stackable. They aren’t too big. Basically, since you’ve been here the sewing machine and book files have come out of the kitchen and the bakers rack on that side went to the corner by the door wall and the island. That’s where the stackable would go – where the table was when you were here. I’m not pretending there is a lot of room, but you have to adjust for your needs. The table is over by the wall about where the sewing machine used to be. The big deal would be where to put the baker’s rack with Grandma’s dishes. I think it would have to go back to the wall where the table is now … Or, move the kitty food from where the dishwasher is and maybe put it on the opposite side of the other rack with the dishwasher put in-between.

It is sort of the struggle of living in an apartment. You need to adapt to the space and needs you’ve got and make the best out of things as you can. There are other advantages in that although you don’t own your home after 30 years, you do only have to pay $900 a month to live in the place. That is an advantage to living here … plus you don’t need to do maintenance inside or outside … You want the place painted … you call the building owners and NO lawn mowing. Obvious problems … hard to own a dog, the walls are painted white, and you can end up with a goldenrod colored stove and sink. Eh, with a new sewing room … I’m willing to suffer through it. As to practical … everything works!

Dr. Marvin and I did a lot of talking last week about how happy I’ve been since getting the sewing studio. He says that it relates to not only the big push to have gotten a home earlier in the year, but in general. I had my own room in college about 30 years ago. Then we got married and shared with husband. I also remember the big deal when we were moved out as to sharing a room with you to getting our own bedroom. About 23 years ago … we were EXTREMELY happy because we got use of our own room in that there was a nursery off the main bedroom of the house originally except that the bedroom was turned into a living room – NICE size with fireplace. SO the big deal was that we traded Mom’s old bedroom set and one of our friends put in the kind of shelves we have here now in the studio. He put them for me on three walls that formed a nook, and then there was a big table in front of a very large floor to ceiling window that held my computer. We’re talking Apple 64 K machine. I was in heaven though because I had my own room and I started my daily writing there – ‘87.

Well as things and changes go through and about 8 moves since the divorce we settled into this place and we’ve been here now almost 10 years. We never felt that we had our own place because we were sharing or renting including living for a bit in a homeless shelter. I couldn’t replace the feeling I had of that one “library” in the old Victorian room … but all through my marriage that was the happiest spot. I couldn’t get to the bottom of things here at the apartment in that the majority of the time living here in the apartment the room was either for a guest room or a junk room. Most the time before Rich moved in we were petrified of space … We spent most the time in front of the computer – literally, and then we’d have to push ourselves to moving to the rocker to sleep just 8 feet away or to bringing garbage back to the kitchen.

We were threatened with going into the kitchen except to get something to eat and using the bathroom. Even before Rich lived here, he was cooking for us and we’d have to struggle staying away from the computer long enough to warm up food. We were scared of the oven, the microwave and even our bedroom if Rich wasn’t there.

Before the dishwasher Rich would come over to help us with that and we were just managing to get our clothes to the laundry service but it take many usages of clothes between cleaning. It was very hard and we missed a lot of days work, because we were afraid of leaving the house. Nothing felt safe.

Well long story short … we’ve made a tremendous amount of progress to be setting up this room and being able to be here. Granted our small computer came with us and that provides our security. Dr. Marvin said that it’s our optimal distance between people. You are here with us as we think of you and imagine you reading this, but you are not here literally. That’s like very safe. We feel still in control. I know that this is in part of being a multiple. We have parts that cope with living and parts that don’t. It was a major statement for our parts to make a commitment to Rich in washing clothes if we had the machine. Rich still does the cooking, but we’ve made progress over time with the dishes and the dishwasher, picking up, and doing other various tasks around the house. I used the oven last week cuz I bought a frozen pizza. It’s probably the first I made since being here. We NEVER use the oven.

As to literally getting the washing machine dryer … that is going to be given some space again. Rich had to spend the extra bonus money he got on regular bills.

*sigh* BUT, we’ve got it on that magical wish list we’d talked of before and Linda picked up on. Linda I can really understand having to put off things until they become more affordable. At one time through all of this we had gone bankrupt because we had so much on cards – we had the three boys, minimal assistance from ex and was putting groceries on credit card. Now we only have the bank credit card – so we can’t spend any more than we have literally in the checking account. It’s a VERY good idea for us.

There will be plenty of time then if you are not in a rush as to further discussions on your electronics. I’m sorry I jumped so far and heavy into it.

And, obviously we’re a bit prejudice with the netbook because we love it so much.

We’re using it now in the studio rather than the bigger computer in the living room. We’ll honor anything you decide on. I’d have a hard time too because we are really caught-up in how much value we put in the Apple iPad. One day we’ll have one … and we’ll love it, because we have had such a great experience with all the applications on the iPod. That’s the biggest deal about the iPad. All the applications I have on the iPod will get transferred over to the iPad … and believe me I’ve got some doozies! We’ve got about 65 of them including facebook, the Internet, email, and even quilting stuff. Don’t get me started on our Pantone app which is an assistance in choose colors for the quilts… Just love the iPod Touch!

Can’t imagine how much fun to have all those apps on a clipboard-like and size iPad. They call her sexy and I believe it … if you are actually looking at a co-workers, you are going to be dazzled.

One thing on batteries though CS … is that you need to deal with that anytime stepping away from an electrical outlet – you know that from having the laptop.

Fortunately there’s not many places we go where you can’t plug-in. I like the versatility of going to a meeting with the netbook – unplugged and knowing it will work throughout, but when I come back to the office, I plug-in. As an aside things are getting better in that regard … although most devises you can step away from the umbilical cord for 2-4 hours … the netbook I was talking to Linda about is supposed to have a battery with 14 hours of usage away from the cord. That is a VERY nice asset. For the record though even car adapters come easy now-a-days so you can get a regular outlet in the car from the lighter. That’s what gives us the ability to go on longer trips with Rich … as long as I can be utilizing the computer I don’t get too scared. Coming to your place has been a very big deal for us in showing how much more we can handle. I am still probably spending 15-30 minutes a Dr. Marvin session in debriefing after the trips … it’s a lot on our system to be out there. It doesn’t show on the confident parts, but underneath we’re still learning to cope.

As to the Skype we are talking apples and oranges. I don’t think you can talk on Skype to more than a couple people. I’ve looked into it some, but am not real well versed. I know a lot of people overseas use it, but Thom seems to prefer Yahoo IM’s. We can both have videos on our computers – like your laptop and when we sign on we can talk and see each other. It’s very nice. The Ventrillo has other advantages. Like you can talk to as many people as you would like. I’m not sure if it has a video part … just know that when I’ve visited the boys … frequently they are on the game and they’ve all got the headphones like they were sitting in a cockpit.

Thom used to have a $500,000 house and he had a large room dedicated to about 7-8 computers and multiple screens … there was a large ledge table that ran around 4 sides of the room like if they were air traffic controllers and there would always be 4-5 people or more in the room and they’d all be playing the same game – so moving over the game territory and because they’d have this Ventrillo their cousins in River Forest and Texas and friends from cross country or other countries could all be talking and hearing each other like a huge conference call. I loved it!

Like wow … is THAT Manuel!?? I haven’t heard him since he was a baby! It was all very high tech and operational. I appreciate your interest in Skype though I know it’s a big one out there. I’d have to get used to wearing clothes at all times.

Rich said last night we’re a nudist … eh … don’t figure you want to hear about that though hehehehe. Just everyone that might come over knows they have to call first :)

Oh … one thing too left on the Swiffer conversation. I wasn’t talking about the floors – we were ok in that area for the time being, we were talking about the Swiffer duster. I like the idea of using the furniture polish with it too … so that when you dusted you were also treating the wood. Obviously everything for a cost. BUT … the point is that dusting is supposed to be one of my tasks and we’re falling short on the mark. I need something that’s just simple to use and can get the high and low places where I’m falling short. It seems that it goes in and around things pretty good – plus we’d like to try their spray dusting product … it seems it works without wax and can be used even for laminate … but believe me we’re far from expert in cleaning. Our house is like yours CS – lots of dust! Calling it snow … well, bottom line is its still dust. Maybe we can both conquer this evil fiend at the same time :) :)

Whoops forgot the sewing part. We did do a little yesterday, but not much. We were much more into the writing and something, but I don’t remember what the something was. Usually means a part change. We don’t always know what’s up. I do know Rich was home after shopping and that was after his game. He’s really worked hard (though with complaints) of doing house maintenance. The quilt hanger isn’t going to work with the sticky stuff so will need screws into the wall … it worked for a while and I was talking with back to it while Rich was cooking. Then we heards a PLEPGH sound and we looked at him and asked for confirmation … that was the blanket, right? Yah, ok … next round. He also tried to put in the design board, but the screws weren’t long enough. He’s trying and that’s the most important thing. I think he could be handier, just really doesn’t like it.

We did four more panels, but never really reached our groove. Hmm, I think we took a nap sometime too because when we woke up we found there was a fan sound – Rich had gotten an stand-up one. I hadn’t realized how hot it was and we get cranky in bad weather. After a big he didn’t mind if we just turned on the air. Ok then that will work. I brought the sewing – pinning into to the living room as Rich went down the line talking to his kids. He’s a good dad. I’m afraid the quantity of all the skirt panels are being tough because it just tough, but were moving ;) So glad to hear of your accomplishments over the weekend Linda! Anytime you can say you got something done – well that’s like a bonus! Pictures are great!

Nice Weekend Some Sewing

Had a nice weekend. Went to an outdoor wedding. Cut out two pillowcases and sewed both over the course of the weekend.

Today went out with hubby taking pictures with our digital cameras. He gave me some pointers that I asked for. Got a little sun on my white arms. I'm not much of a sun worshipper.

Received lots of electronic suggestions from Ann Marie, my quilted moose sister. I'm just not sure what I need and don't need. I don't want to duplicate anything. Things are just so unsettled at work, I just want to get a few paychecks coming in and back into the comfort zone. I like the idea of a wish list though. It also give me something to save for. I might check into the used concept. We have a young man at work who may just know someone who wants to upgrade or get rid of one.

Wow! Did this take the last HOW MANY hours? *silly grin* ... that's right sew!

WooHOO! Linda's up. What a sisterly thing … people being up in their studio's … If only my studio could talk to your studio oh what stories they would tell! This is a real feeling of camaraderie. Just have to see now how CS is keeping up. You know we've gone real overboard if we suggest Ventrilla.

AHA! CS weighed in too! Cool, cool. I was over looking at Ventrilla … and if things go right … I hope to convince you all of its value! Ventrilla is a voice system that the boys use, particularly while they are playing their games. It allows any number of them - they used to have like 8 people in a guild, but you could get a server that allows thousands of people to communicate. I'd just stick to the 10 and other $5 a month option. My understanding is that only the host server has to pay and there is no cost to anyone else. EXCEPT you are going to need a computer preferably in your studio or other sewing hang-out.

See the neat thing about this is that from what I've heard with the boys - all people on the same system at the same time can talk to each other at the same time. Everyone has to be responsible to get their own headphone with microphone.

News interruption here … does anyone know yet about Google TV? Oh man it was just announced 2 days ago. It's pretty hot stuff. If you got a few moments or have a computer savvy husband point them in the direction of an Internet search for "Google TV." Wow. Google got together with Sony, Intel, Logitech, Best Buy and Dish network and they'll come out in the fall with a box that allows your TV and computer to work together. WOW! Start saving some extra nickels!

Ok, sorry about that just a hot flash, but give yourself about 20 minutes and watch the announcement and video for Google TV. Then ask your husband … so have you heard about this yet? Any guy in his right mind is going to just jump out of his skin to marry his TV, computer and remote all together … Just mind-blowing! It'll be here in time for Christmas!

Shoot shoot … all excited! Back to business though … It stems from Linda's thoughts on what kind of electronics to tune into. I think I'm going to agree with CS that if you could only get one and you are starting from none, you really have to get a computer. NOW … as one who always has something on her wish list … I've got a stand-up computer and a netbook, plus I have a stand-up at work and an iPod Touch that in general and as a group pretty mind-blowing. With the above coming in for Google TV, you are going to need a cable or dish provider and an HD TV … so if you didn't have that yet that might be the first consideration. Most people have them though, I think.

So … given all that I do have … Linda my next big electronic purchase is going to be an iPad. I can't hardly wait to get one. I've had two financial opportunities this year and I had to choose other both times. Basically, it was more important to have the sewing room put together, than an iPad, but it's pretty darn competitive wishing! Plus, now I have to put a $1000 wish on a washer and dryer. I figured if we CAN have one and Rich isn't going to do it … it's going to be me. Hehehe

I'm completely sold on the iPad, but as something to do all your computer needs it's not the best thing. Like they have an additional $70 keypad/charging base which allows typing and there's typing on the glass screen so you can do that, and you can do word processing on it and convert or edit with a Word document, but you do not have any of the Microsoft programs. I use at minimum a gazillion times a day Microsoft's - Word, Excel, Outlook and One-Note. It does have a word processor and package and if you don't use those kind of things for business and general, then that's one less reason to have a computer over an iPad. But, I think the biggest reason people get computers first is because of their memory.

I have a little computer called a netbook and even though it's small it has 170 GB of memory. That's still quite a bit. I fit 10 years of work documents on an 8 GB flash drive, so now my new flash drive is 32 GB. Just trying to get a scope on things. The biggest difference for an inexpensive computer is that the Netbook computer keyboard is 92% the size of a normal one. I like it because my hands aren't that large and it feels good to type on it and it weighs a SMIDGE of a laptop so I carry it with me every time I leave the house. I put it in a leather saddle-bag with all my other gizmos. Now in comparison … an iPad starts at 16 GB for $500 and if you want their biggest model it's going to cost $700 and that is only 64 GB. I would personally though want the $830 model (which doesn't include a whole lot of accessories you'd want). The most expensive $830 model gives you the 64 GB range, and like the other models - you can connect via Wi-Fi. You could get Tony to wi-fi your computer for like $2-5 a month (at least that's what it costs here), but if you were out in the world - you need to know where your wi-fi is coming from. Nowadays they have a new deal called the 3G network. It's a very very good connection, but it costs $30 a month and you can only get it from AT&T. I really detest AT&T. Love Apple hate AT&T

Now then saying all that … you can honestly say … neither one of us might ever use that many GB anyway … pretty much your just banking on the future, because you don't know what kind of memory applications or programs are going to use 3-5 years down the line.

If cost were a factor … an iPad can get expensive. The stripped down 16 GB model is already $500 without ANY thing extra. Notebooks are all over the place as to cost, but the netbook costs - at least for mine and believe me … we researched A LOT! But, you can get my netbook for a total cost of $430. You could also get a like new used one at Amazon for $250-300. That's some

The only thing it doesn't have is traditional means to be getting new programs into it so I use a USB Flash drive. You can get one for $20-30. Otherwise I bought no extra for my computer. The one thing I still would get … just that I had one is a steao headset. I use it a LOT. I like to watch CNN news in the background and then listen to music on the headphones, because the quality sounds so good. I subscribe to a service called Rhapsody that allows me to play absolutely ANY music conceivable for a service charge of $12 a month.

The other thing I started with is Ventrilla. For that you just need a computer and a headset. Again that would be if we all get along down the line and want to open a party-line to talk in chorus each from our homes - at no cost AND from our swing studios!!!

You could ask Tony, but I love Logitech the best and they have a VERY nice headset that is wireless (you just put a connection in a USB drive) and it would allow you to walk and listen up to 33 feet from your computer. It would allow hand free motion so we could sew and talk! Ok, we're like giddy, but the headset cost $99 and can be found here …

Now to be fair to the iPad … I still WANT ONE!!! Mostly because of it being an ereader and because it has about 300,000 other applications. Don't get me started. Anything that I've purchased for my iPod Touch I can use on the iPad - it's just like a Touch, but bigger. And you just gotta know I love gizmos. iPad's way up there because it's just like carrying a pad of paper, but works in the 21rst century!

Hmm, did some looking and found out a few new things ... Look at Amazon for the above computer Asus eeePC. This is the one I have, but they've upgraded it with some remarkable new things. It still only has a 10" screen and is not as sexy as the iPad, but it's now selling for $365, has 250 GB Memory, it weighs only 2.8 pounds so is highly portable and includes free shipping though you could overnight or 2-day mail it hehehe. Man I emphasize I've had your itch and urges before. Good luck with the decision ... hopefully I've helped, but at the least hope I didn't further confuse. Oh and the new model has Windows 7.0.

Ok, I'll let you compose yourself now. Oh it's me?! Well, Man you could think I might have electronic preferences and opinions. Hehehe

Maybe if you were like me today … you would have never finished that last pillowcase. I'm going to hope the best for you. I'm really being very high hoping now because Rich said he was going out shopping which means he might come home with drywall screws AND a Swiffer duster. They run an optimistic TV commercial :)

Love you guys!

Ann Marie

Hey ... just a couple more things. Did you know that our blog has 98 posts so far? Just think ... could you be the 100th post? Just think ... it be an honor!

One more thing. I know that the two of you are more easily swayed into using Facebook than blogging, but do you know that we have a regular follower now? Look her up ... she's very interesting and does quilting and such for her only income. Gotta admire that in a woman! Her name is Margaret and she's from Australia!

Christmas like surprises coming in!

Good morning. We’re up to the first part of the day. I’m expecting someone to come in soon for a 9 am meeting. She’s running late. She’s got to do a general interview with one of my clients. It has to do with a State survey. We’ve filled in all the pre-information, just waiting. Figure it’s a good time to progress this cause.

You can see from the above that we’ve been busy clicking away again. It’s coming together … maybe not as fast as lightening, but at a pretty good clip. I feel proud that we’re stopping to get some sewing work done in-between. Last night we got 2 more rows done. WooHOO! I appreciate the elf-man who came in and agreed to model the blanket for me. Sure is sweet! The feature of the first picture though is that the new Ott lites came in. They were unexpectedly heavy and very solid feeling … that was a nice surprise. I can hardly contain myself in trying to explain the difference in light when using the sewing machine.

As advertised it is very natural – like sunlight. The light is very even and comforting. No distortions or shadows. It’s just so cool … I got overexcited and wasn’t able to sew for the rest of the night, but a smidge. Then we tried to lay down and in the process Rich got a half hour massage before we gave up and went to sit back in the room for a while. Now we’re starting to imagine what it’s going to be like with the fabric.

We’re a little concerned … we’ve pretty much got the shelves and curtains figured out, but we’re not sure about the panels. We’ve gone over and over it again in our mind how to do it. CS says that she has a ton of Velcro, but then we saw these nice clips with Velcro on them. The reason I liked them wasn’t the cost, because they do seem expensive, it’s just that you don’t have to stick the Velcro directly on the table edge. I’m worried about things like the fabric I’m working on getting hung-up on it. I’m pretty much ready to decide on getting the clips.

The tricky part of the skirt is the panels or skirt around the table. I’ve counted it up before to equal 24 1/3 feet. It goes like 30” + 60” + 60” + 40” + 20” + 40” + 12” + 30” … Ok, I know … this is what we’re going to do … we’re going to just make 8 equal panels of 36.5”. That will cover the 292 “ or 8.11 yards. Then CS will have just under four extra yards to put the ruffle in … that’s about 1.5 so it should work. I don’t know how she gets it measured to ruffle and come up to 36.5, but we’ll hope for the best. The thing about panels is that we’re thinking we have some flexibility as to which ones are up at any certain time. We want enough room for leg room, or access to the scrap fabric bag or drawers under the table. When we don’t want those things or aren’t sitting at the table, then we can put the panels back! Ok, good good … we’re all figured out!

And then we figured the curtains would be each 1.5 yards considering some of the hems and such that have to be made … we’re actually looking for a 48” curtain – 4 panels, each as wide as the fabric – so that’s like what 42”? Should work we’re going to use a little wider curtain rod so the curtains gather most of the time in the open position with the way left and right panels covering the wall to make the window look larger. Cool cool. I can now hardly wait for the weekend!

Hmm, CS – could I cut and sew the 8 panels on the sides and bottom – and then just wait until we come up on the first weekend to do the ruffles? That would move the project along and leave time for the group project for most the time we’re up there. I will just divide the 12 yards evenly into 1 ½ yard panels too and you’ll just have to shrink the 54” to an even 36.5” … that’s almost an extra 18” per panel … it will work, right? I think I’m going to order the clips next … I don’t want Velcro on the edge of the table when the panels aren’t on. I might need your Velcro to stick to the curtains themselves I’m not sure if they come with the back part too – should, but don’t know. This is the Skirt clip we’ll get. Maybe we can pick up like a couple a dozen, but don’t know what it will cost per what kind of set.

Oh man … we gotta stop doing this … we’d looked around a lot to find a place that sold clips that could be used on 5/8” table … we rediscovered the space over at a site called The Webstaurant Store. But, while I was over there we picked up some cork stoppers, a couple small 39 cent bottle openers the clips and a large non-skid serving tray … it was a restaurant place. I’m thinking of bringing meals back and forth from the kitchen to the living room or out on the balcony. Oh man oh man … I’ve gotta stop spending! NO MORE, K? We're obsessing again, aren't we :(

But, they are nice, hmm? They come 4 dozen for $16.99 … that’s a really good price for what we saw out there. Hmm, I’m thinking that that serving tray will be good for bringing dishes and such BACK to the kitchen too. Am I being obsessive today?

CS has volunteered to help with the gathering of pleats in the fabric. That means I should have the curtains done ahead of that time so I don’t get short-changed with the fabric. I’m thinking the project though with the shelves comes first.

Maybe I will commit this weekend to it. I came up with a tough schedule yesterday … in that I tried to figure everything I have to be figuring in. I forgot a vacation day next Monday when I made up this schedule. No one has to tell me twice though I have Monday off! I have extra training I have to do to stay credentialed with the State of IL … the meetings aren’t fun – just required.

So, all that in consideration … what’s next?

That employee of the State for the client’s survey is now in and talking to our client. We talked for a few moments. She has a very quiet, shy, sleepy voice. It will match my client well. Our hanger came in too for the steamer. It’s a really heavy rubber-tipped hanger with a wide shoulder angle and pants/skirt clips on steel. It seems a lot for the cause, but fortunately I only needed one.

So then we’ve got the sewing room lamps and the picture set with the improvement over by the closet area with fridge and steamer. That’s pretty self-explanatory.

I like the part that if you read over the blog you’d see a natural progression of the room coming together. Today … one more bottle of wine maybe and the DIET Mountain Dew. Hmm, Dr. Marvin’s appointment today. That will be cool!

Not too much else … we’re up to our allowance of time in general progression … suppose I should look at the list I left for myself last night. Gotta write up a couple of staffings and corresponding tests, I need to do some Behavior Management minutes and I have to have the DSPs sign some schedules. That’s not too bad, what else? Hmm, Staff training meeting at 1 pm – we’re going to be doing abuse and neglect through the Office of Inspector General. I guess that be enough for one day ;)

Sure hope CS both you and Linda are making the most of your day too. I will look forward to catching up!

Shoot ... State wrote back and I have to reverse the order of my basic skills and Rule 50 meeting. This means I won't take the longer course until August *sigh* Can't win for trying ...
